Cross Country and Triathlon achievements for Thomas

Year 8 student, Thomas Jones, competed for the South West in the British Triathlon’s National Junior Finals last
term, and his team came third overall.
More recently, Thomas competed in the National Cross Country Finals in Loughborough over the weekend of
9 and 10 March, achieving 43rd place out of more than 300 boys from all over the United Kingdom. He was
also selected for the Schools National Cross Country Finals, but he was unable to compete due to a triathlon
commitment.
Most impressively, he is one of six boys from the whole South West region who have been selected to run the
London Mini Marathon which is a 5km event that takes place just before the actual marathon on Sunday, 28
April. He will get to run through central London past Big Ben and the other famous landmarks.
We wish him every success in all of his sporting activities.

                 National Supadance Finals Success

Students Lucy Barnfield, in Year 10, and her sister Chloe Barnfield, in Year 8,
competed in the National Supadance Finals in Blackpool, in December.
The girls competed in both Open Competitions and a Team Event. They achieved
4th place in the Team Event.
Recently the sisters have decided to join forces to take on the competition head-on
as a partnership together. In their first competition they made it through to the
Semi Finals in the Years 14-15 Open Samba, the Semi Finals in the Under 16 Ballroom
and then the Finals for the Under 16 Latin securing 3rd place.
Their mum says, “When they asked to start Dancing lessons, I had no idea how long it
would last and wondered if they may eventually tire of it. But I was wrong, they love
it and their passion is constantly growing. They have both shown a natural propensity
for dance and I swell with pride to watch their abilities develop.”

                 Gold Medal Winner at Rowing
                 Championships

Year 12 student, Phoebe Lansley, recently took part in the nation’s biggest rowing event, the
National Indoor Junior Rowing Championships (NJIRC). She was part of the Plymouth
Schools’ Team at the Copper Box Arena, a multi-sport venue used for the 2012 Summer
Olympics, located in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London.
Over 2000 rowers competed from the ages of 11-18. Phoebe’s team managed to defend
their Gold Medal title for the Women’s Boat Race by 76 metres (based upon the record set
by the Cambridge crew in 1998). The boys’ team also achieved Gold in the Men’s Boat
Race, allowing both to go home very happy with their efforts.
