Cross-Curricular Collaboration
The Design and Technology Department has created an amazing display showcasing the poem ‘Tissue’ from
the English Literature Poetry Anthology.
Gillian Garlick, Design and Technology Resource Technician, explains the process behind the display,
“Mr Strawford, Head of Design and Technology, selected the poem ‘Tissue’ from the English Literature Poetry
Anthology book, which he thought best reflected areas that relate to specific aspects of Design Technology.
I then looked at the poem and initially highlighted words or phrases that I thought could be represented using
images or materials that in some way linked them; for example I used tracing paper for the opening line of
‘Paper that lets the light shine through.’
I gradually worked through the entire poem until I was happy with the variety, diversity and choice of materials
and representations of the words. Finally I arranged for the Network Office to download three different audio
presentations of the poem; one read by the author herself, another a rap version and the third one is the poem
being read and illustrated by Chris Riddell OBE, the 2015-2017 UK Children's Laureate. These are played in a
loop from within the cabinet so that not only is it visually attractive but also shows how the spoken word in
different forms can produce entirely diverse representations of the same written word.”
Kelly Olive, Assistant Principal said, “Thank you so much Mr Strawford, and
your team, for creating this amazing display showcasing the poem Tissue
from the English Literature Poetry Anthology. What a fantastic example of
cross-curricular collaboration to support students.”
