Year 7 Clubs Fair
In September the new Year 7 students were invited to
attend the annual ‘Clubs Fair’ held during the lunchtime
in the Sports hall. The fair gives each College club an
opportunity to promote themselves and encourage the
Year 7 students to sign up to join.
The Sports hall was packed with students keen to
participate, whilst the Performing Arts Department
showcased students’ gymnastics and musical abilities,
through displays and performances.
The College offers an amazing variety of extra-curricular
clubs, including; Science Club, Book Club, Art Club,
Sustainability Club, to name but a few. Authenticity
Student leadership Conference
Also in September the College held its very first Student
leadership Conference for those in Years 8 to 13, who have
already played a key role in supporting the Teaching and
4 News learning at the College, as well as a
plethora of other leadership roles.
The key aim of the conference was to
harness the views of our student leaders about the key priorities
of the College and what they think we need to do to support
them even further.
Respect
Pageants Provide a Platform for empowerment
Year 12 student, Poppy Vernon has recently represented Devon in the Miss Teen great Britain
Beauty Contest, winning a place in the grand Final.
She explains her personal journey and how her confidence has grown; “My experience of
being in Miss Teen great Britain has made me an altogether more determined and
empowered woman than I was before. I wanted to push my boundaries, to challenge
myself and to help me to not be afraid to make brave or bold decisions. It certainly
wasn’t easy preparing for the pageant. I had to make public appearances, organise
charity fundraising, find business sponsors, work with social-media collaborators, plan what I
wanted to say in front of the panel of judges as well as manage my gCSes.
I firmly believe that pageants are for empowered young women who have a vision of
making themselves stronger and better, and to empower other women to do the same, and
come together as one. I have learned many things about myself and my confidence has
increased over the course of my journey.
Beauty pageants can be looked at through two lenses; as a negative or as a positive.
Pageants can be deemed sexist and anti-feminist from one angle, but the women like me
are there because we are definitely independent, ambitious and driven. either way, it is best
to love yourself first, and not feel like you owe anyone anything and have to look a certain
way. everyone is beautiful and unique and I am a very proud believer in that.”

‘Rainbow laces’ for lgBT
The College girls’ Football Team celebrated the Stonewall lgBT Rainbow
laces Campaign Week in style. Sporting ‘Rainbow laces’ as part of an
awareness campaign driven by Stonewall and the Premier league, the
students achieved a phenomenal victory against Mounts Bay Academy
girls’ Football Team, with a final score of 9-0. The girls continue to challenge
gender stereotypes within sports, and wanted to represent the College’s
support for Stonewall’s campaign to make sport lgBT inclusive.
To further show Respect and Tolerance, they celebrated their
victory with their rainbow cards ‘ICC4lgBT’ at the end, a
tremendous win in all respects! Well done! Empathy
