Students Win Trophy at STEM
In February, six Ivybridge Community College students
attended the National Final of The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools
Technology Challenge event hosted at the Bristol and Bath
Science Park.
Team members battled against schools from across the
Southwest having developed their unique radio controlled
four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle to the strict specification
requirements for the event.
The students gained £500 sponsorship from the Army, and
chose to theme their vehicle on a 4x4 pick-up that could be
used as a support vehicle at the Ten Tors event. The team also
managed to forge links with a local Plymouth based model
shop, Nimrif RC, enabling them to fit light and tilt sensors linked
to front and rear headlights, as specified for the competition.
The body shell was vacuum formed from a wooden mould
before been fitted with all the electronic components.
The team did extremely well in a gruelling eight
part assessment throughout the day, including
verbal presentations, a showroom and folder
inspection, two track races and a scrutiny of their
engineering and design choices.
At the prize giving ceremony the students won a
trophy for ‘Best Track Performance in the
Development Class’ and received high praise for
their efforts across all aspects of the competition.
Well done to Dan, Erin, Lucy, Hayden, Tom and
Ruby for their efforts and achievements!
