4 Character Education
Becoming a School of Character
As part of the College’s continuous professional learning, five members of
staff have signed up to take part in a training programme regarding
Leading Character Education in Schools: Becoming a School of
Character, in partnership with the University of Birmingham.
This is a pilot programme, involving a number of staff interested in
character education – ‘How do you do it?’ and ‘What does a ‘School of
Character’ look like?’ The course aims to provide a comprehensive
overview of both the theory and practice of the leadership of character
education within a secondary school setting.
The programme itself involves professional research, a self-evaluation
activity and how to develop a culture of Character Education, within
our College.
“We are all very excited about the possible impact this may have on helping to develop our students’ further
understanding of our key virtues and how this can be developed within and outside of the class, as well as in our
community.” Gill Taylor, Deputy Principal.
GCSE Options ‘Taster Sessions’
As part of Ivybridge Community College’s commitment to helping our students to develop a greater
understanding of different GCSE Options courses available to them, the College ran a weekly lunchtime
‘Options Taster Sessions’ for students to gain further insight and knowledge in subjects that they were considering
taking at GCSE.
The students were able to meet the Heads of Departments and were led through what to expect in the lessons,
and possible careers opportunities that could be achieved from studying certain subjects. They also had the
opportunity to take part in example lesson scenarios, and ask questions regarding the subjects.
On Wednesday, 4 March the Year 8
Options evening was held, so that
students and parents alike could find
out more about the wide array of
subjects on offer in Year 9.
The Head Girl and Head Boy of Year 9
provided a personal insight into the
options process and gave their own
‘top tips’ for students in the formal
presentations during the evening.
