8 Science Week - What Amazing Experiences!
Environmental Science talk
Our students had the opportunity to meet John Bull, an Environmental Scientist from
Plymouth University. They were given the chance to analyse the air quality using
samples from Ivybridge, Plymouth and Newton Abbot.
Chess Dynamics workshop
Year 9 students had the opportunity to use a gyroscopically controlled thermal
imaging camera similar to those used in the Royal Navy for surveillance. They
discussed careers and routes into Science and Engineering including
Apprenticeships and Graduate training.
Filham Park Vets workshop
Former student, Alan Johnson, a vet from the Filham Park Veterinary Clinic visited the
College with Beth Walker, a Veterinary Nurse. The students were taught how to suture and
they practiced on oranges and bananas. They discussed the types of volunteering work
they would be advised to undertake to help them make their applications to Vet School
more successful.
Pyromania show
Roy Lowery from the University of Plymouth spoke to the students
about careers in Chemistry, such as the use of Pyrotechnics in
music concerts, productions and firework displays. The students
were awed by many of his demonstrations, including burning a
biscuit that had been soaked in liquid oxygen.
Volcanic Hazards Workshop
Dr Jodie Fisher from the University of Plymouth, along with a fellow Geologist and a
Volcanologist, visited the College to talk about her career in Geology and to run a Volcanic
Hazards workshop in which students had the chance to use the data from the site of a
volcano to predict when it might erupt and how this information can save lives.
