British Judo National Championships for Adam and Pierre
Ivybridge Community College students Pierre Michelin in Year 11, and Adam Vosper in Year 12, both members
of South Brent Judo Club, took part in the British Judo National Championships, held at Sheffield Arena over the
weekend of Saturday, 1 and Sunday, 2 December.
Adam competed in the Cadets (under 18's) U55kg category. he won 3 contests to reach the top of his group
and secure a place in the semi-finals, winning a Bronze medal. Adam did incredibly well, especially as he was
injured for most of the year. he will now stay on the national squad and will hopefully compete in the
european Cadet Cups for great Britain.
Pierre competed in the Cadets U73kg group. After a tough contest which went into golden Score Pierre lost
by a single wazari, but came back and won in repêchage with a big ippon throw. In his third contest Pierre
was level with a wazari each but got caught in the last minute of play.
Pierre’s dad said,”After an incredibly long day of competition at the British Championships Pierre and Adam
gave it their best and fought extremely well, they can look back with pride and satisfaction. they both faced
up to the challenge and went into the Arena giving everything they had to achieve at this highest level in
British Judo. the British Championships bring together 600 of the very best young athletes across the two age
categories and to compete within this level takes effort and a huge amount of dedication. Both students can
walk away from Sheffield knowing they are both Judoka who have earned the respect from all the opponents
they face in their categories.
I hope they now continue to inspire our club members and I’m certain the pair will return stronger and
motivated with further experience gained from this year’s journey of highs and lows of training and
competition. Congratulations to Adam and Pierre.”
earlier this year Pierre also attended the West of england British Schools Judo Regional Championships, where
he competed in the Years 10 -13 Under 73 Kg category earning himself a Silver Medal. this is a fantastic
achievement, as he was competing against students 2 years his senior. Consequently, he will now represent
the College once again in the British Schools Judo Championships in Sheffield next year.
5 km Challenge
On Sunday, 7 October students from across all Year groups competed in the
Plymouth Schools 5 km Challenge. this was designed to encourage school
children to get into running and compete against other schools in the area.
this year over 200 students took part in the event which was held following the
Plymouth Open 10 km Race.
In the girls’ category, Seren english, in Year 11 came third, and in the Boys’
category Oliver Woodmason, in Year 10, was second. the team event of
Seren english, lewis lee, Oliver Woodmason and Olivia travers were 2nd place
overall. Well done to our trophy winners and to all who competed and
represented the College. thanks go to Mr Clift, Mrs Philpot and Mrs Mitchell,
who ran with the students in this great local event.
