Students are winners at the Imeche Cardboard Boat Race
Year 8 and 9 students took part in the annual Institution of Mechanical Engineers
(ImechE ) Cardboard Boat Race at Plymouth’s Mayflower Steps on Saturday, 15
September 2018.
Following an initial briefing in June from Bruce Robinson of Imeche, the five
College teams began weeks of designing, building and painting their boats.
the teams faced strong competition over the 200m course from local youth
groups and schools. Many succeeded in the water and we are delighted to
announce that one of our entries, ‘Can’t Be Stopped’, was the overall
competition winner. the winning students produced a boat with a unique,
innovative design without any additional adult help.
Our aptly named ‘the Ivy Mermaids’ came in third place. the other Ivybridge
College teams who participated in the race were ‘the Rainbow Fries’,
‘the Ivybridge Five’ and ‘Kevin’s Wonky Rainbow’. With the latter winning the
‘Best Sinking Boat Award’.
the day was supported by local SteM companies, with plenty to keep
participants and spectators occupied before the first races of the day. the
students really enjoyed the whole experience taking part in SteM taster sessions
and workshops, helping them to understand more about engineering.
A very big well done to all of the staff and students involved.
Design technologists Inspired by Former Student
Last term, Year 12 Design Technology students were taken to the New Designers
Exhibition in London, by Adam Strawford and Claire Northey, of the College’s
Design Technology Department.
the exhibition showcased the work of 3,000 plus graduate talents, representing
over 200 of the UK’s best creative courses and the largest spectrum of
contemporary design in the country. graduates exhibit their final project work
in the hope that a design company or investor may be interested in them, or
the product.
Matt Watts, a former Ivybridge Community College Design student, who
studied graphics and Product Design with Claire, was at the exhibition. Matt
has achieved a First in his Product Design Degree from the University of
Northampton. “I was extremely proud that I had been part of his initial design
journey”, said Claire.
