Celebrating British Science Week in Style!
(Cover story)
Ivybridge Community College had a fantastic Science Week, packed full of inspirational
activities. The celebrations began with a talk by Coral Jonas, Head of Discovery, Learning
and Research at Dartmoor Zoological Park, about how to get into careers in Zoology.
The students were also treated to a hands-on experience with a tenrec, a Western
hognose snake and cockroaches.
Students in Years 7 to 9 were given special lessons, with the British Science Week theme of
journeys, and all students were invited to a series of lunchtime activities, including ‘Pops
and Bangs’ and ‘Fish and Squid Dissection’. Lisève Fierens, from CEFAS (Centre for
Fisheries and Aquaculture Science), visited the College to show students how to dissect
these animals to be able to view their organs and to explain their adaptations.
The Year 8 students watched the ‘Big Bang’ Science Show by the Wonderstruck Company,
including huge smoke circles, exploding Rice Krispies and a human jet pack.
The week ended with a ‘Dress Like a Scientist’ competition,
with the challenge of choosing careers in Science that do
not involve wearing white coats. The winner of the
competition was Alice in Year 11, who came dressed as an
astronaut.
Denise Smith, Director of Science said “It has been such a pleasure to provide
these opportunities for our students and a delight to see how inspired they
have been. They have been stopping me and the Principal in the corridors to
talk about how much they’ve enjoyed the week.”
