Storyteller Shares a Tale

On Friday, 1 March, the Learning Resource Centre had a visit from Mike O’Leary, a
professional Storyteller. Mike works for Read For Good, a charity that raises money to
buy books for hospitals and brings the power of stories to children in hospital via mobile
bookcases and resident storytellers. After the Learning Resource Centre’s Big Book
Bonanza, Read For Good were so impressed with the money raised (over £200) that
they sent Mike to celebrate the College’s achievement.
Mike and his musical walking stick entertained Year 7 students in assembly
before he settled in the Library, where he had the students gripped as he painted
magical imagery with his words, keeping them hooked from beginning to end.

The Magical World of Harry Potter

Thursday, 7 February saw the return of Harry Potter Day. Student Librarians
helped to decorate the Learning Resource Centre and at lunchtime every
seat in the Library was taken, as there were a whole host of enchanting
activities to take part in. There were quizzes and word searches, along with
‘Wand Chooses the Wizard’ and ‘Design Dobby a Sock’ worksheets. We
also had Pin the Scar on Harry Potter and a Potter photo booth with plenty
of props.
A raffle in aid of Lumos, a charity founded by J. K. Rowling, raised a grand
total of £70, which will go towards Lumos’ goal of finding loving families for
all children by 2050.
It was a wonderful day to celebrate the on-going passion for Harry Potter
and the magical world J.K. Rowling created over 20 years ago.
