College Charity Ambassador
Working with the Community
College Charity Ambassador and Year 12 student,
Millie Snodin, recently met with Councillor Anthony
Khong, Mayor of Ivybridge and Councillor Ann Laity,
College Governor, to discuss upcoming projects that
the College are hoping to set up and support in
Ivybridge.
Millie said, “As a Charity Ambassador my main aim is for
the College to work with the community to fund raise
for projects in the local area. The meeting took place
at the Town Hall and enabled us to discuss many ideas
which included; setting up a local Beauty Bank, to help
those who do not have access to specific toiletry
products. And supporting the local library which will
allow the students at the College to use and support a
scheme in their local area.”
The Rowing Marine live via satellite
Year 10 students had the privilege of a live satellite phone call on Tuesday, 5 March, with News 3
Lee Spencer, the Rowing Marine. Lee served in the Royal Marines for 24 years before an
accident left him as a single leg amputee.
Lee has since completed an Atlantic crossing with 3 other amputees. His motto is not to be
‘defined by disability’. He visited our Year 10 students last year and was one of the most
inspirational speakers our students have ever seen. It was during this presentation when
Lee outlined his next challenge; to row the Atlantic (over 3,500 miles) and to beat the
World Record set by able bodied athletes. This currently
stands at 96 days and 12 hours.
When we spoke with Lee he had been rowing for 55
days and was on track to be finished in a week. This is
such an amazing effort from a truly inspirational man.
The Year 10 students prepared a set of questions for Lee
and were all fully engrossed as he gave his responses.
**Update** Lee Spencer finished the crossing from mainland Europe to South
America in 60 days, breaking the able-bodied record for the route by 36
days. He arrived in Cayenne, French Guiana, at 04:06 GMT (01:06 local time)
on Monday,11 March, having faced 40ft waves and a bout of gastroenteritis
during the voyage, while sleeping for just two hours at a time.
We are looking forward to inviting Lee back to the College soon to tell us all
about his amazing record-breaking achievement.
Sporting Leaders
On Thursday, 17 January over 50 students from the College were selected to
attend a training day arranged by the South Hams and West Devon School
Games Organiser. The students who attended the course have achieved
National Governing Body Sports Qualifications in one of the following
categories: England Athletics Leaders, RFU Rugby Referees, LTA Tennis Leaders
and Youth Sport Trust Competition Organisers. The students will now develop
their skills as referees and leaders by supporting the primary and secondary
sports competitions and festivals.
In March, the LTA Tennis Leaders put their training
into practice by running a skills warm-up session before the children started
their matches at the South Hams Area Primary Schools Years 3 and 4 Mini-Tennis
Competition at the Ivybridge Tennis Centre.
The Sports Leadership Academy students supported the Primary Schools Years
4, 5 and 6 Sports Hall Athletics Festival. The students helped with the activities
and recording the children’s scores. The College students did such a fantastic
job that the Athletics Sport Lead has requested whether they will be available
to officiate at the Devon Summer School Games County Finals in the summer.
